Patricia’s Wellness Glossary

The words I use often — explained simply

If you spend time with me, whether in my programs, my content, or my blog, you will hear certain words again and again. Why? Because I do not believe health is only about naming a disease — I believe in understanding what is happening underneath it.

My approach is rooted in finding and supporting the root cause. That means I often talk about blood sugar, inflammation, the gut, metabolism, nutrients, stress, energy production, and the everyday habits that shape how we feel.

This glossary is here to make those conversations easier. Think of it as your guide to the language I use most — explained in a simple, practical, and real-life way.

1. Root Cause

The deeper reason why symptoms are happening in the first place, instead of only focusing on the symptom itself.

2. Insulin Resistance

When the body stops responding well to insulin, making it harder to keep blood sugar balanced and easier to store fat.

3. Metabolic Health

How well your body creates energy, balances blood sugar, uses fuel, and maintains a healthy weight and hormone balance.

4. Metabolic Dysfunction

When the body is not handling energy, blood sugar, fat storage, and inflammation in an efficient and healthy way.

5. Blood Sugar Balance

Keeping glucose levels steady throughout the day to support energy, mood, hormones, cravings, and long-term health.

6. Insulin Spike

A fast rise in insulin after eating, usually triggered by foods high in sugar or refined carbohydrates.

7. Glycemic Index

A system that measures how quickly a food raises blood sugar after you eat it.

8. High Glycemic Foods

Foods that raise blood sugar quickly, often leading to energy crashes, cravings, and more stress on metabolism.

9. Low Glycemic Foods

Foods that raise blood sugar more slowly and help support steadier energy and better metabolic balance.

10. Fiber

A part of plant foods that supports digestion, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, helps fullness, and supports healthy blood sugar response.

11. Protein

An essential nutrient that helps build muscle, repair tissues, support hormones, and keep you full and strong.

12. Healthy Fats

Good-quality fats that support hormones, brain health, cell health, satiety, and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

13. Empty Calories

Foods that provide calories but very little nourishment, usually low in vitamins, minerals, fiber, or protein.

14. Antioxidants

Protective compounds found in foods that help the body deal with oxidative stress and cellular damage.

15. Oxidative Stress

A state where the body is under too much internal stress from free radicals and not enough protection.

16. Inflammation

The body’s natural defense response — helpful in the short term, but harmful when it becomes chronic.

17. Chronic Inflammation

Low-grade, ongoing inflammation that may contribute to fatigue, pain, metabolic issues, gut problems, and aging.

18. Gut Health

The health of your digestive system, including digestion, absorption, the gut lining, and the balance of gut bacteria.

19. Leaky Gut

A term used when the gut lining becomes more permeable than it should be, allowing unwanted particles to pass through into the bloodstream and potentially trigger inflammation, immune reactions, and digestive or systemic symptoms.

20. Gut Inflammation

Inflammation affecting the digestive tract, often linked to irritation, imbalance, poor food tolerance, or chronic stress.

21. Microbiome

The community of bacteria and other microorganisms living in the gut that influence digestion, immunity, mood, and metabolism.

22. Mitochondria

Tiny structures inside your cells that create energy for the body. They are often called the “powerhouses” of the cell.

23. Hormonal Balance

When hormones are working in a more coordinated way to support energy, mood, metabolism, sleep, and overall well-being.

24. Nutrient Density

How many beneficial nutrients a food gives you compared with how many calories it contains.

25. Cravings

Strong urges for certain foods, often influenced by blood sugar imbalance, stress, habits, poor sleep, or nutrient gaps.

26. Energy Crash

That tired, foggy, irritable feeling that can happen after blood sugar rises quickly and then drops.

27. Dopamine Boost

Something that gives a quick pleasure or reward response. Some food habits can create this temporarily without truly supporting health.

28. Real Food

Food that is closer to its natural state and less processed — usually more nourishing and supportive for the body.

29. Ultra-Processed Foods

Highly manufactured foods that often contain refined ingredients, additives, and less of the nourishment the body truly needs.

30. Healing Support

The tools we use to help the body recover and function better — such as food, sleep, stress reduction, movement, supplements, peptides, and lifestyle practices.
